A refrigerator that’s consuming too much electricity can raise an electric bill and may signal worn components like failing door seals, improper temperature settings, or a problem with the compressor. The good news: you can pinpoint the issue with a few practical checks and, if needed, a simple measurement.

Start with the basics: confirm the fridge and freezer temperatures are set correctly. For most households, that means the refrigerator around 37°F (3°C) and the freezer at 0°F (-18°C). Then make sure the fridge isn’t packed so tightly that air can’t circulate and that the doors fully close and latch.

1) Check for efficiency killers

Next, inspect the door seals and the surrounding airflow. Look for gaps, tears, or warping in the gasket; even small leaks can force the compressor to run longer. Also ensure the condenser coils (usually on the back or underneath) aren’t coated with dust—dirty coils reduce cooling efficiency and increase electricity use.

Finally, listen and observe. If the compressor runs constantly, the fridge cycles very frequently, or you notice unusual warmth around the exterior, these can be signs of cooling system trouble or airflow problems.

If your refrigerator is hardwired or you can’t measure directly, check the electric bill changes in combination with the refrigerator’s run behavior. However, direct measurement is the fastest way to confirm whether it’s truly the source of the extra electricity.

4) Interpret what you’re seeing

After measuring and inspecting, you can narrow down likely causes. Increased run time with cold temperatures still reached can point to airflow issues, dirty coils, or leaky door seals. If temperatures don’t stay cold even with frequent cycling, the issue could be a failing compressor, thermostat/control board problem, or refrigerant-related failure—situations where repairs are usually best left to a qualified appliance technician.

As a practical next step, check for frost patterns in the freezer. Excess frost (especially on one side) can indicate airflow blockages or a defrost system problem, which can raise power use and reduce performance.

When to call a professional: if measurements confirm unusually high kWh, the refrigerator can’t maintain temperature, you hear loud or abnormal compressor sounds, or you suspect refrigerant failure (often indicated by poor cooling plus long run times). A technician can test the system components and confirm whether the solution is cleaning/adjustments or a part replacement.

By combining quick checks (settings, seals, coils) with real energy monitoring, you can determine whether your refrigerator’s electricity use is simply affected by conditions—or whether it’s time to schedule maintenance.
