An electric stove burner that doesn’t heat evenly is a frequent complaint—and the causes range from simple cleaning issues to worn components inside the range. Before assuming the burner itself is failing, it helps to check the factors that affect how heat transfers from coil to cookware.

1) Dirty or damaged burner parts

One of the most common reasons for uneven heating is residue build-up. Food splatter, grease, and mineral deposits can interfere with contact and heat transfer. If the burner cap, drip pan (where applicable), or the coil terminals look dirty, the burner may produce “hot spots” or fail to reach full output consistently.

Similarly, if parts are warped, cracked, or not seated properly, heat distribution can become irregular—especially around the outer edges where contact may be weakest.

2) Incorrect cookware contact

Even when the burner is fine, uneven heat can be caused by cookware that doesn’t make full contact with the burner. Warped pot or pan bottoms, uneven glass-ceramic bases, or cookware with a diameter that’s too small for the burner can lead to scorching at the center while the perimeter stays cooler.

Cookware with flat, smooth bottoms and a size that matches the burner’s diameter typically performs better on electric coil or smooth-top elements.

3) Worn out coil or failing element

For coil burners, the heating element may be degrading over time. A coil that’s partially burned, stretched, or nearing end-of-life may heat some areas more than others. Symptoms often include uneven glowing, longer warm-up times, or inconsistent performance at the same knob setting.

For smooth-top electric ranges, the element surface itself can develop hot and cool zones due to internal wear, damage, or failure of the heating circuit.

4) Problems with the burner socket, switch, or control

Uneven heating can also originate from the range’s electrical pathway. Loose or corroded connections at the burner socket can reduce power to part of the circuit. In some cases, the selector switch or infinite control (or electronic relay/control board on newer models) may be delivering irregular power, which looks like patchy heating.

If replacing or swapping burners with another identical one changes whether the problem follows the burner or stays with the same stove position, that pattern can help narrow the fault to either the burner assembly or the range controls.

When troubleshooting, prioritize safety: unplug the range or shut off the breaker before removing burner parts. If you’re uncomfortable inspecting wiring, or if there’s visible scorching, arcing, or a burning smell, stop and consult a qualified technician.
